POTSDAM in Concrete – A Landmark and a Carbon Sink

Utilization of around 1 tonne of eLM Zero in precast concrete

Storage of 2.4 tonnes of atmospheric CO₂

Crafted by: Beton und Naturstein Babelsberg GmbH

Date: Summer, 2025

Location: Potsdam, Germany

The POTSDAM city sign, produced by Beton und Naturstein Babelsberg (BNB) with ecoLocked Materials®, was unveiled in the summer of 2025 as a new landmark of the state capital in front of the Film Museum. This installation, standing roughly two metres tall, marks the world’s first city name sculpture crafted from CO₂-neutral concrete, transforming urban design into climate action.

Unlike conventional concrete, the material used here permanently stores carbon, locking away 2.4 tonnes of CO₂ — equivalent to the carbon captured by 40 trees over 10 years or the CO₂ emissions from driving a fossil-fuelled car for 6,000 km.

Made possible through the collaboration of the Landeshauptstadt Potsdam, Oberlinhaus, and other local partners, the project demonstrates how public art can serve a dual purpose as both a cultural landmark and a tangible contribution to climate action.
