The ecoLocked climate impact manifesto
At ecoLocked, we are dedicated to maximizing our positive climate impact and ensuring measurability and genuine additionality. We believe that carbon dioxide removal (CDR) is essential in combating climate change, compensating for the slow pace of global emission reduction evident in both historical and ongoing residual emissions.
Scaling up CDR requires investment in both carbon offsetting and carbon insetting solutions. We support the following hierarchy for corporate and public climate action:
- Reduce
- Inset
- Offset
We prioritize insetting as it allows companies and municipalities to contribute to climate action directly and locally by integrating carbon removal into their (product) value chains.
Based on the latest scientific consensus, we are convinced that the production of biochar from biomass residues with subsequent conversion into building materials and secure storage (Biochar Carbon Removal) is positively additional. This is true provided the biomass residues used would otherwise have reacted to CO2 within a relevant timeframe through combustion or decomposition.
Beyond climate impact, we aim to create additional positive outcomes for both the environment and communities. We do so, for example, by replacing emission-intensive materials (cement) or materials harmful to biodiversity (sand) with biochar-based products, which also creates new income streams for biowaste owners.
In all our activities, we pledge to:
- Assess feedstock sustainability: ensure additionality from a climate perspective, adhering to the "do no harm" principle for all other environmental and social effects. (See material selection policy in our FAQ)
- Ensure cradle-to-grave lifecycle assessment (LCA) for all claimed impacts, whether at the product level or as carbon credits.
- Engage third-party certification bodies or MRV providers to validate our LCA and prevent double-counting of impacts by multiple parties or in multiple records.
- Price our negative emission products in a way that does not disincentivize CO2-emitting companies from engaging in reduction activities.
- Ensure continuous monitoring of the permanence of all carbon stored via our products over a building’s lifetime.
We will periodically review and add to these commitments. We consider climate action both a responsibility and an opportunity to create a better future for all and invite businesses, communities, and individuals to join us in our mission.
Let’s build carbon sinks together!
Additionality
We use biomass that would otherwise emit CO₂ without our intervention
Insetting
We embed carbon removal within supply chains, turning climate action into core business value
Verification
All impacts are third-party certified and fully traceable
Co-benefits
We support nature and local incomes while storing carbon
